Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski of Poland said in an interview that his country's military has the right to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine.

Poland and neighboring countries are "responsible for protecting their own airspace," despite NATO's opposition, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Sept. 2. Russian drones and missiles have previously entered Poland's airspace during attacks on Ukraine. However, Polish allies advised the government to exercise restraint when dealing with unidentified airspace violations, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. "Membership in NATO does not trump each country's responsibility for the protection of its own airspace – it's our own constitutional duty," Sikorski told the Financial Times. "I'm personally of the view that, when hostile missiles are on a course of entering our airspace, it would be legitimate self-defense (to strike them) because once they do cross into our airspace, the risk of debris injuring someone is significant." In early July, Ukraine and Poland signed a bilateral security agreement, which included a commitment by both sides to examine "the feasibility of possible intercepting in Ukraine's airspace missiles and UAVs fired in the direction of the territory of Poland, following necessary procedures agreed by the states and organizations involved."

NATO countries close to Russia understand what a danger Putin is. The invasion of Ukraine is a threat to Western democracy as a whole. If Russia is firing missiles which strike close to Poland then the Poles have every right to neutralize them.

Sikorski began to insist on Poland's right to shoot down air targets after a Russian drone reportedly crossed the country's border in an attack against Ukraine on Aug. 26. The minister said that the risk of Polish casualties increases the closer a missile is to its target when intercepted, so it was better to shoot it down at a higher altitude over Ukraine. "Ukrainians have told us: you're welcome," Sikorski added.

This is not some sort of theoretical scenario. Last year a stray Russian Kh-55 missile made it all the way to a forested area near the city of Bydgoszcz.

The US has not yet given any F-16s to Ukraine. But that doesn’t mean Washington isn’t considering the move.

As Ukraine’s top allies are calling on the U.S. to send them F-16s to counter Russian air supremacy in the ongoing war, the Pentagon now says it’s assessing the fighter jet skills of two Ukrainian pilots in Arizona.

“Two Ukrainian pilots are currently in Tucson for a familiarization event for U.S. and Ukrainian pilots,” said a Department of Defense spokesperson in a statement to VICE News. “This event allows us to better help Ukrainian pilots become more effective pilots and better advise them on how to develop their own capabilities.”

The Pentagon acknowledged the curious timing of the two Ukrainians training in a stateside Air Force facility, but made it clear that “there are no updates to provide regarding F-16's to Ukraine.”

The Russians claim that Ukraine cannot shoot down their Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile. However an F-16 stands a good chance of taking out the MiG interceptors which Russia currently uses to launch Kinzhals in international airspace over the Black Sea.

Besides the billions of dollars worth of American weapons the Biden Administration has already transferred into the hands of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers, the Pentagon and its NATO allies have been actively training personnel for the Kyiv government on everything from Javelins, Leopard tanks, to Patriot missiles systems, both in the U.S. and in Europe.

Ukraine claims that Patriot missiles are able to shoot down Kinzhals. Regardless, removing Russia’s few remaining advantages is the only way they will end this war.
